Step of Faith

Whenever I think of faith, the first image I picture is the scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade when Indi needs to cross a chasm and it’s clear there is no visible bridge. He must step out onto the bridge; once he does it appears and he can continue across to the other side. If you don’t know what I’m talking about here’s a link to the scene on YouTube.

Indi had to take a literal leap of faith.  I’ve heard pastors say things like, Peter trusted Jesus, but the only way that was evidenced was when he took a step out of the boat, or if the Israelites were going to pray for the sun to stand still they needed to be prepared to march all night long. What they’re saying is, if you’re going to trust God to be faithful, it’s important to take action to demonstrate that you are believing he will provide.

Dan and I have been encouraged to take our own leap of faith by this question: “If God provided your entire partnership team so that you could go right now, what would hold you back?” This has fed a sense of urgency in our process to get to Romania. We have been praying that God would provide our prayer and financial partners quickly, so that we will be able to travel to Romania as soon as possible. As a follow up to that prayer, we have been taking action to make ourselves ready to go.

There are a few things standing in our way of leaving, among those is the need to get rid of most of our belongings. For the most part, everything we own must go; the Lord told us to get rid of these things as soon as possible. We have been asked several questions regarding this:  Why are you getting rid of your furniture now if your faith goal to leave isn’t for another year? Where will you live when your lease ends? What will you sleep on? While we may not have those answers, we are taking a leap of faith.

Believing that we needed to get rid of our belongings ASAP, we prayed for an opportunity. At that point in time we had no idea where we were going to live until we left for Romania, but we believed God would provide. So we gave away our furniture to a family who had none and we wrote our letter stating we would not renew our lease and therefore be moving out in May. The next day, while asking for prayer regarding our living situation, a couple offered us a place to stay. The Lord answered our prayer almost immediately, but it was after we took a step in faith.

While there are many unknowns ahead, we are trusting that the Lord is going to provide for us. What we do know is that he holds the future and he has already prepared our way. He tells us in Matthew 6:34 “Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” We are choosing not to worry about our needs, and we are planning on taking steps of faith, trusting that God is who he says he is, and that God will do what he says he can do.

  1. Wow! Great job, you two ... what a tremendous example of God's faithfulness in response to your "leap of faith." My deep respect for you has just grown even deeper! God is totally awesome, and the two of you are pretty awesome, too! :-) I pray for you daily; in fact, I even reach up and touch the picture I have on my bulletin board of you and your cats, so hopefully you're feeling a "touch of encouragement" every day ... :-) Keep up the great work!!!

    1. Rocky, thank you so much for your prayers! We know that we can only take these leaps of faith because we have individuals like you lifting us up on a regular basis. We can't do this without you! Thank you for walking with us.
